About me

Hello, my name is Alfred Toth, and this is a little bit about me and what has led me to this point,

As a young adult I really didn’t cook that much. Aside from making a sandwich, or reheating leftovers, I relied on mom most of the time. The first time I really needed to cook was when I went camping for the first time. The year was 1984 and I was 22 years old. I said to myself, “What can I cook”, then I remembered my Moms Chili. It was a very simple recipe, and I said to myself, “I can do that”, and I did.

I later went on to preparing lunch and dinner several times a week for my mom, as well as cooking the holiday turkey.  I became a master of the BBQ , cooking all cuts of meat on the Weber. I was “King Carnivore” and proud of it. I began cooking every weekend and sharing my food with friends, many of whom commented that I should open my own restaurant. In 1996, when I moved out on my own, I was preparing about 80% of my meals from scratch.

In 2009, I moved to Cusco Peru where I lived for five years. In Cusco, I had to become very creative in the kitchen. I had to do more with less. And it was those last few years in Cusco, where I saw my kitchen skills improving by leaps and bounds. In 2012 big things happened, first I became manager of the biggest bar in Cusco, and with its humble kitchen I put Tex-Mex food on the Peruvian map. I also had the privilege to meet and cook with world famous chef Laura Bridge. With Laura’s encouragement I was able to take it to the next level in the kitchen.

After Peru I moved to central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende to be exact, and it was here that I met my wife and soulmate Liliana. Liliana has become the lucky beneficiary of all my kitchen exploits. Here in San Miguel, along with teaching yoga,  I specialize in Mexican food, both teaching cooking classes and catering small events. Since I spend so much time in the kitchen, I like to say, “La Cocina Es Mi Oficina” “The Kitchen Is My Office”. Many people have asked me, ¨why do you like to cook¨and I reply, ¨because I like to eat¨, and I eat good.

I still enjoy sharing my food with friends and family, and thus the blog has become my vehicle to share my recipes and passion for cooking with an even larger audience.
